The podcasts I make for Forest Spirituality with Julie Brett are not advertisements for the people I interview. Yes, those people often have books they have written, or courses they are teaching, music they have created or events they put on etc, and yes I will tell you about them and help you find out more. But when you tune in, don’t expect it to be like some fleshed out promo or ad. It’s more like I’m inviting you to eavesdrop on the kinds of conversations that experienced Pagans have when we meet each other and want to learn about what each other do; what we believe and practice.

My podcast is more of an example of how Pagans talk to one another in real life – not when we’re in capitalist sales mode. I wouldn’t do that to you. What I want to share are the kinds of conversations being had on a couple of plastic chairs at the back of the hall after a talk at a Pagan gathering. They’re the kinds of things we discuss while warming ourselves by the fire after a group ritual. They’re the ways we talk when we’re in the car together on a road trip to a Pagan festival.

I tend to ask similar kinds of questions every time, and they’re not questions about what products people have to sell or how to “sign up now!” “like and subscribe!” Like, no thanks, that kind of podcast is not my jam. I mean yeah, go like their stuff, follow them and learn with them, because they are awesome, but that’s not what this podcast is about. That’s like a bonus extra. Instead, this podcast is here to take you deeper, and to get to know each other better. To find something more real and personal in this world. So, the questions I like to ask my guests are things like:

“How did you find this spiritual path? Tell us the story.”

“What does your practice look like at the moment?”

“What are you passionate about helping others to learn?”

“What are the core values that hold your spirituality and world view together?”

“What changes do you want to see in the world? And how do you think we can get there?”

I might not ask them directly in these words, but this is where I’m going. I love hearing people’s responses to these kinds of questions. It helps us to understand how another person creates meaning and purpose in their lives, and how the things that they create, whether they are books, courses, events etc, are there to help others and to spread that sense of purpose and meaning to make the world a better place.

Everyone has a story to tell, about how they see the world, what brings them joy, how they have faced difficulty, and what has helped them to get through the hard times and celebrate the good times. Those are the stories worth sharing.

I love making podcasts. It brings me a lot of joy to chat with people and allow listeners to eavesdrop into our conversations like a new friend we just met at camp and want to get to know better by sharing a bit of ourselves. Come on, pull up another chair with us in the hall, or sit down with us by the fire, or listen in to the conversation from the back seat of the car. This is how Pagans talk. We are happy for you to join in. Maybe you have something to say too?
